A recent study revealed that a slight spinal misalignment can be linked to serious heart problems. In the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research, health experts published a case study involving a 54-year old man who underwent chiropractic therapy and experienced normalization of his lipid panel after six months of rehabilitation with his chiropractor. During his course of chiropractic care, this patient did not make any additional changes, like diet or exercise, making the results of this study much more interesting.
Although more research is needed to understand the physiological mechanisms involved, this is another example of chiropractic patients experiencing positive health changes as a result of chiropractic care. Additionally, the safety of chiropractic care has been recognized in numerous other studies, so as a conservative option, chiropractic care can be a great first option.
What is Vertebral Subluxation?
The chiropractor diagnosed the 54-year old patient with vertebral subluxations, which is a misalignment or abnormal movement of the spine. It results in structural and neurological alterations in the spine and nervous system. In this patient, vertebral subluxations were found in his neck, pelvis and sacrum.
Vertebral subluxation may lead to a series of neuroendocrine events which can result in an abnormal cholesterol metabolism. Theory dictates that if the spinal distortions are corrected through chiropractic practice, it allows the body to regain its physiological balance.
When the patient first visited his chiropractor, he generally complained about his high cholesterol and revealed his long medical history related to angioplasty and heart attack. The patient also narrated how he’s heard countless stories on the effectiveness of chiropractic in lowering cholesterol. He was eager to get off his medication and felt seeing a chiropractor was the best next step.
After chiropractic care, follow up laboratory tests revealed that the patient’s cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides had amazingly improved. Improvement in mental and physical health has also been reported.
How Spinal Misalignment May Lead to Heart Problems?
Chiropractic research has revealed that minor disturbances to spinal alignment and function may set off numerous health problems because the body’s homeostatic mechanisms are thrown off.
Dr. Matthew McCoy, chiropractor, public health researcher, and editor of the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research, stated, “If you damage or compress or otherwise interfere with the neurological structures in the spine this can have far reaching implications on the functioning of the body. Through research reports like this we are finding that correcting the misalignments or abnormal motion associated with these spinal problems reduces the nerve interference and people experience improvement. In this study it was a man who had risk factors for cardiovascular disease.”
